US 285 runs southwest from Denver through Bailey and over Kenosha Pass at 10,001 feet, dropping into South Park at Jefferson and continuing to Fairplay. For anyone headed to the Dream Stream, Eleven Mile Canyon, Tarryall Creek, or Fairplay, this is the main route — and it avoids the I-70 corridor entirely.
The lower canyon section outside Denver is the usual chokepoint, and it backs up quickly.
The pass gathers snow and wind while Denver stays dry.
The open basin past Jefferson produces whiteouts with no new snowfall at all. This is the section that catches people out.

Usually the most reliable way into Park County in winter, and considerably lower than the Divide crossings. The exposure is in South Park itself, not on the pass — if wind is forecast, the open basin is the part to worry about.
From Summit County, Hoosier Pass on CO 9 reaches Fairplay directly. From Denver there is no comparable alternate to 285 short of running I-70 and coming south over Hoosier.
Kenosha Pass tops out at 10,001 feet on US 285 in Park County, between Bailey and Jefferson. It is the high point on the Denver-to-Fairplay route and is considerably lower than the I-70 Continental Divide crossings.
US 285 is often the more reliable winter route into Park County because it tops out at 10,001 feet rather than crossing the Divide above 11,000 feet, and it avoids the I-70 corridor entirely. Its weak point is the open South Park basin past Jefferson, where ground blizzards form on windy days with no new snow.
The open South Park basin between Jefferson and Fairplay is the section that catches drivers out. Wind across the treeless basin produces whiteout conditions without any new snowfall. The Turkey Creek canyon closer to Denver is the usual crash and congestion point.
