The Eisenhower-Johnson Memorial Tunnel carries I-70 under the Continental Divide at 11,158 feet. Roughly 30,000 vehicles pass through on a winter Saturday. When it closes, there is no quick alternative: traffic backs up to Silverthorne westbound and Georgetown eastbound, and the detour over Loveland Pass adds an hour in good conditions and is often closed itself in the same storm.
A single spun-out vehicle stops both bores while crews clear it. This is the most common cause of a tunnel closure and typically lasts 20-60 minutes.
CDOT meters traffic into the tunnel rather than closing it outright. Expect stop-and-go from Silverthorne on heavy days.
Hazardous-materials loads are permanently banned from the tunnel and must use Loveland Pass. When Loveland closes, those loads have nowhere to go.
Code 15 traction law is common from October through May. Code 16 (chains for all vehicles) shuts out anything unequipped.
Westbound backs up Friday afternoon and Saturday morning. Eastbound is worst Sunday 1-6 PM. If you can move outside those windows, do. The tunnel itself rarely closes for weather alone — it closes because of what happens on the approaches.
Loveland Pass (US 6) is the only real alternate, and it is higher, unlit, and closes more often than the tunnel does. In a serious storm both go down together. The genuine alternate is waiting.
