Live conditions for the three best rivers near Breckenridge: Blue River, Snake River, and Tenmile Creek. Updated 4x daily from USGS gauges.
Breckenridge sits in the heart of Summit County at 9,600 feet, surrounded by three fishable rivers within a 15-minute drive. None flow through town itself, but all are close enough for a morning session before hitting the slopes or a quick evening trip after work.
The Blue River below Dillon Dam is the main event. It's a Gold Medal catch-and-release tailwater running through Silverthorne, 15 minutes north of Breckenridge on Highway 9. Cold, consistent dam releases produce brown and rainbow trout averaging 14 to 18 inches, with fish over 20 inches common. This is technical water that rewards fine tippets (6X-7X), small flies (#20-26 midges), and patient nymphing. The Blue River Trail parallels the river through town, making access easy.
The Snake River flows through the Keystone area, 15 minutes east of Breckenridge. It's a smaller freestone with pocket water, plunge pools, and willing brook trout mixed with small browns. Not a trophy fishery, but a fun, scenic half-day option. Best July through September after runoff clears. Standard Colorado regulations apply.
Tenmile Creek runs through the town of Frisco, 10 minutes north of Breckenridge, before emptying into Dillon Reservoir. It's a small stream with easy walk-and-wade access along the bike path. Fish are smaller (8-12 inches) but plentiful. A good option for beginners, families, or when you want a quick fish without a big commitment. Best after runoff in July through October.
Focus on the Blue River. Low, stable dam releases and consistent midge hatches make winter arguably the best season. Fish tiny Zebra Midges and Mercury Midges (#22-26) deep under an indicator. Best window is 10 AM to 2 PM. Snake River and Tenmile Creek are largely frozen or unfishable.
Blue River stays fishable as BWOs begin hatching in late March. Snake River and Tenmile are typically blown out by May runoff. Stick to the Blue River tailwater where dam-controlled flows remain manageable. RS2s and Pheasant Tails are the go-to nymphs.
The most variable season. Blue River summer releases from Dillon Dam can push flows above 300 CFS, making it unwadeable. When that happens, check Snake River and Tenmile Creek — both clear up by mid-July and offer decent fishing through August. PMDs and caddis hatch on all three rivers.
Prime time across the board. Blue River flows taper off and browns get aggressive ahead of the October spawn. Snake River and Tenmile Creek are in great shape with low, clear water. BWOs hatch heavily on overcast afternoons. Streamer fishing for Blue River browns produces the biggest fish of the year.
